Netsplits

Posted by froo on Friday 30 August 2002

Apologies for this evening's netsplits, they were a combination of planned downtime and some attempted denial of service attacks which we will be closely following up with the proper authorities.

in my opinion it\'s not a DDoS against quakenet , but a more global scale ... If you take a look at http://www.internettrafficreport.com/ you\'ll know what i mean . :-)

imo that is really lame that someone would dos quakenet, it just spoils it for the rest of us. Really pi**** me off.

OMG READ the webpage... right there on the traffic page to the right they say they have been \"Having technical Difficulties\" .. and if you\'re curious what they mean.. you could look at most of the routers with 100% packet loss and see that they have been that way since about 10 days ago. LMAO Christ! The entire world is losing almost 75% of its packets? you realize how many BILLIONS a day that would cost in duplicate BW? HAHA man put it on a web page and someone will beleive it... hahaha

MikeC said on Friday 30 August 2002

#4, I don\'t think that you\'re right, because packet loss, response time and traffic was much worse on tuesday (view 7-day graph). So there must have been any netsplits on tuesday... So it seems more realistic that it\'s a DOS attack against quakenet.

i don\'t know if any hackers have something to do with all the netsplits (and servercrashes ?). in the last time really much server-admins just said \"DoS-attack by hackers\" when they apologized for problems with their service so don\'t worry about me when i say i don\'t believe you. but i don\'t ! it\'s pretty easy to blame some hackers for it when an upgrade or something is taking more time than it was planned to take and most it is done before checking this out or people even lie about it..

eXclusiveOR said on Friday 30 August 2002

You dont need to be a hacker. Its most probably some lame arse script kiddies.

James[UH] said on Friday 30 August 2002

seems, like qnet would get the same probs, ircnet had in 1998/1999... establishing a new network structure should help. but it also points out, that you can try protect systems from beeing hacked, but throtteling incoming traffic is much more difficult and starts with improved router setup at the providers... cause: if a lot of traffic is stopped at the provider\'s corerouter... it wont bother the host, which is to be flooded. other idea: use other phys if for linking and user conn.

blackwing said on Friday 30 August 2002

Some poor-abused-as-babies-lamerz or something...? Just is look at the calendar. Summer is over and schools have started. Now those poor poor scriptkids actually have to do something during the daytime and it upsets their weak little mental balance! =) DALNet has reported rather massive attacks against it too. This is all very sad. I hope that someday those poor lamerz will grow out of it and maybe get a real life too while at it. =) --- I had a Real Life once, now I have a Computer

MatiX said on Friday 30 August 2002

wee...netsplit ... time to go out in the sun o_O

blun4 said on Friday 30 August 2002

the worst part is, that attacks like these (ddos) cause, that in 1999 some of the main contributors of ircnet said: \"no support any longer\", which caused major incoveniences for the entire network, cause they lost some of their main hubs (like gmd, bonn)... so lets hope, that something like this wont happen... setup firewalls and discuss with the connectivity providers about protections from their side (like qos quotas)...

blackwing said on Friday 30 August 2002

Oh we\'ve been DDos\'d before and will be DDos\'d again no doubt. However they are just minor hiccups that we always fix as we tend to know what we are doing :) I\'ve caused more network problems with a /die in the wrong terminal window - \"err where did hub just go? ....\"

Zarjazz said on Friday 30 August 2002

i think the admins really know what to do 8)

blun4 said on Friday 30 August 2002

Zarj is a helper? nooo! ;) At the end of the day, Quakenet can only do as much as is humanly possible. Quakenet is here to keep its users happy and will continue to grow and do so, regardless of spineless attacks by faceless morons. Ditto with Dalnet. I sincerely hope that perhaps Qnet and Dalnet can put some resources together, perhaps to help prevent such attacks in the future. Even with firewalls, a powerful DDoS attack will make networks suffer. Its a shame, but Qnet will do all they can.

jep, preventing ddos is very difficult. but it starts with firewalls and ends with filters and bandwidth control at the provider\'s router. because: preventing ddos at the target is more difficult, than cutting the traffic down somewhere in the flow! there ARE possibilities, buts its a lot of work and requires providers who are willing to change lots of routing paramaters... because: traffic is money :P

Whats the point of trying to hack/attack sometihng. In the end you don\'t look good to many people by shouting \"I R TEH L33t !!1 I R H4X3d j00 NEWBZ!!\"....well apart from your followers. If things like this cause major disruption on a network, many people do get peeved off as they sometimes may nto be able to log on. h4x0r sucks :P

Forcer| said on Saturday 31 August 2002

Forcer, Distribute Denial of Service. Basically, getting lots (normally talking about thousands) of machines to send information to a specified machine to overwelm it, and usually take it \'offline\' so usuable to us. In the case of quakenet, you wont be able to connect to. There are variants of it, but all have that one goal.

blun4 said on Saturday 31 August 2002

Did QuakeNet´s Servers/Shells.. not have a firewall.. or something,? where the hacker´s IP was writed down, in a log file? then QuakeNet could go the hacker´s ISP? and report it to them..? - that would be nice.. if the hackers internet be closed. then they dont can hack anymore... =)

DarkDeviL said on Saturday 31 August 2002

#61: 1. Your talking about Crackers (or Scriptkiddies), but certainly not about Hackers. 2. Even if the attacked qnet Servers had a firewall/paketfilter, the resulting logs would fill up the disk space really fast. 3. In a dDoS attack, the attacker won\'t take part in the flood. He simply says his flooding nodes (e.g. a cracked server here, a trojaned workstation there ...) to start the flooding and then leans back and watch the netsplits.

Soohrt said on Saturday 31 August 2002

imo dDoS attacks sux. Are they any good, and for who? What most ppl dont see, is that every dDoS attack can(with time and the right ressurces) be traced to the person(s) who sent them to the peers... /me looks around and yells: Hate those fucking lamers!... /me kisses *!*@*.quakenet.org and says: love you sweety, nothing bad is going to happen to you, when i\'m done with those lamers (that is, if i get my hands on them)

w|sCrat`da said on Tuesday 03 September 2002

#73, I doubt anybody does this to get op in a channel really. I assume that somebody just enjoy the chaos. We aren\'t talking about somebody making a DoS attack from an adsl connection or similar - This is pretty much bigger than that.

i|Avatar said on Wednesday 04 September 2002

Only reason I could think of why this happened, would be that some jealous luser(tm) from some small, not known network (like IRCnet or Dalnet) didn\'t like that we were the #1 network in whole world. This is sad, because we all know that Quakenet is the #1 network in the whole world, and therefore we will be the main target for those jealous lusers(tm) from small networks. ;< Oh, and if YOU HACKER are reading this, I am not telling you that my real IP is 127.0.0.1!!11

alpha said on Wednesday 04 September 2002

Shadow sugguested Qnet was being attacked by jealous lusers(tm) because Qnet is growing so quickly. While this is true I still believe Qnet has a lot of growing to do as it only has servers widespread over Europe. If it can push further into the Americas it could easily double the number of users! The only drawback would seem to be the script kiddies which seem to be in abundance stateside, hiding behind their \"13-year-old-unprosecutable-unless-$5000-of-damage-has-been-done\" sheen of security

Chubzee said on Wednesday 04 September 2002

#87: DDoSes can cost far more than $5000 of \'damage\' also we are slowly expanding into the US, but we\'ve not managed to grow beyond one server. We are still trying for quality not quantity ;)

Yarn said on Wednesday 04 September 2002

I first thought it was technical probs. But now I think it was attacks, cause its unrealistic that tech probs would stay as long as the netsplits has occured.
