BNC Lotteries/Raffles/Giveaways/Tombolas

Posted by cro on Sunday 24 November 2002

Recently a number of channels have been closed because of BNC lotteries. QuakeNet considers Lotteries, Giveaways, Raffles or "Tombolas" to be a form of advertising, as these events are usually associated with the gathering of people within a channel, and they are also considered a form of Spam, as users are encouraged to advertise the event in other channels.

Both Advertising and Spamming are specifically against QuakeNet's rules, and so we do not allow BNC lotteries on QuakeNet.

This activity hit us pretty much by surprise. It seems as though as soon as 1 channel started it every other channel wanting users decided it was a good idea. Because there was no announcement most channel closures were for a period of 1 hour only (cut out the reason for the spam and the spam stops). However now that an announcement has been made there is no reason to plead ignorance :)

Specceh said on Sunday 24 November 2002

incidently, the news comments is not the place to complain about a particular channel, hence the denied comments :)

That was not the first time Deckard acted in such a unpolite way, but that is not the thread to complain about IRCOps. I think this new rule is great. The spamming like \"BNC verlosung in #channel um 20h !!!\" every 5 minutes was horrible !

[AB]_Neo|mIRC said on Monday 25 November 2002

hmm. this maybe nice if you got rid of the bnc tombolas but in my case its horrible \'cause i did not win my bnc in a tombola or some stuff. i got this bouncer by the leader / sponsor of my counterstrike clan and its not nice not having access to it any more. because it seems you just closed some of the bncs like mine. imho the bnc\'s of my clanmates work fine. i think this is a good rule at all but it is not good to kill the bouncers \"randomly\". maybe you find a way to there\'s a better way.

w-are-z`m47r1x said on Monday 25 November 2002

w-are-z`m47r1x said on Monday 25 November 2002

#32 Well, the ground thoughts of lotteries are not bad, but when a channel gives out poor quality bouncers, just to get their channel spammed across half of the net, it is bad. And when channels do it just to get idlers in the channel, it is really bad. I\'m almost sure of that 99.99% of all lotteries are started of these reasons, therefore 99.99% of the lotteries on Quakenet are bad, an evil deed.

Is a \"lotterie\" allowed if you tell the people not to spam, advertise and not to make amsg\'s.

felo said on Monday 25 November 2002

Lotteries by their very nature encourage spam, and once it stops its almost impossible to stop (its interesting that many of the involved channels were moderated so THEY did not suffer the spam others were forced to endure). You are advised not to start any activity which relies on gaining a high user count in the channel where it would not normally be that high.

Specceh said on Monday 25 November 2002

Hey I got banned from Quakenet tonight. Some guy was spamming with lottery and soccer crap, so I told\'m to shove it or I\'d report him. Next thing I know I got disconnected and now I can\'t connect anymore (\"Oper Abuse.\"). Sounds to me that some opers are in this as well. Well, get me unbanned anyway, u can see who did it I assume, and punish that bastard. Faine and Fermoo or something I donnow, those were the two who spammed, and I talked to Fermoo or Fengo or whatever..

Deleon said on Monday 25 November 2002

|GEF|aXe said on Monday 25 November 2002

Yes it´s a good idea. I think spam uses many Traffic on the Servers and i know, traffic costs much...

commx said on Monday 25 November 2002

BNC/Shell lotteries Running competitions or lotteries to give away IRC bouncers or shell accounts will result in the channel involved being closed, and possibly the removal or banning of the trust involved. If the channel operators concerned advertise the channel, or ask other people to advertise the channel, these channel operators may also recieve a network ban. -------------- hmm... seems to me that most of quakenet\'s users have never ever taken a look at the rules.. :)

ones|miKe said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

In my opinion it\'s also a pretty good rule... maybe it stops the huge spamming caused by these lotteries... #15: As I\'ve seen it IRCOps join the channel, warn the channel operators and tell them to stop and if they do NOT do it, the channel gets glined...

skater_x said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

mhmm why does Qnet close a chan when they do Lotteries? If a network can`t handle such a count of amsg or users in a chan they don`t have to close the chan, they have to find the problem why their network can`t handle that! Many people support QNet when they connect to it and they have the right to do a Lotterie and son on... So if QNet doesnt change that i think many people go to another network there are 1000 out there.. think about it Qnet Ops

meSkalin said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

#43 The Network can handle it, however more than 99% of the users on this network do not want to be a part of the resulting spam and advertising.

Ferg said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

#43 god, think. \"We\" don\'t want spam or such, this is IRC god damnit. People want to TALK, have conversation. That can\'t be done, with everyone spamming their asses off with away scripts, I\'m playing at x, scripts, join my Q channel to get Q or I\'ll give you voice if you bring ten people. Imo S should be in every channel with 100+ persons and it should strike harder on advertising, first warn then kill!

kjuze said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

Yeah but then people would maybe advertise in lots of small chans to get 100 idlers for S, which wouldn\'t really solve the problem of advertising.

Jack-The-Ripper said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

#44: But think about the 99% who don\'t know why they cant join their fafourite chanel. Most of the irc-user even dont know the rules. So it will take a long time until everyone knows about \'lotteries\' and their reasons. If the IRC-OPs continue, closing chanels in this kind, they have to close more then 20% of al the chanels.

kritzi said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

]GBC|Dark[ said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

äy :( why is my comment denied? it was a simple nice-rule-comment :((

blun4 said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

Well, had users bothered to read the rules (as are the conditions of connecting to quakenet) they would have known that spamming was against the rules and so they have no real excuse against being banned and #39, advertising in #help every 5 minutes was starting to annoy people (and about 50% was for BNC lotteries)

salteh said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

#49 You mentioned a channel name. As I said earlier in the thread, we wont either comment on or hold up individual examples on the website comment system. Every channel is entitled to an objective look by an oper, not mob rule :) tho you are of course allowed to mail concerns to info@quakenet.org

Specceh said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

hi i like this new rule and i hope that some things (like getting a Q) will be harder too. ATM Qnet has 140K users and 130K channels.... (the second biggest network has 130K users and 50K) With all these bouncers the network will get bigger and too complex to work => see all the netsplits?

HBboy said on Tuesday 26 November 2002

#45 Imho the features of a S bot should be implemented in every Q without a switch to turn it off if thats possible with the current free resources. It would be nice if the staff could give a statement what will happen to the S bot. the only information we have is that \"it\'s not available this time\" since many months now...

If the ops from an channel doesn\'t started advertising their bnc giva away, but the user in that channel start to spam all over to da QuakeNet what happens then ? Would this channel be closed ? Or do you consider it that not an channel op started the advertising spam ?

akaShifty said on Wednesday 27 November 2002

#54 Each case is taken individually. If ops take no action to prevent the spam (and setting +m in their own channel is not action) then it will count against them.

We never forced anyone to make adv for our chan. We do NOT encourage ppl to do so and we do NOT tolerate any spammers or advertisers in our channel.

xP-c0re said on Thursday 28 November 2002

#67/68 - Yeah, would be nice if you could develope a 100% reliable system to do that. That is hardly possible and would probably take ages of developement time to become really reliable. Only think of the routines needed to be able to decide wheather it\'s spam or not - and sending every message through these routines would eat system resources like hell.

hmm the rule is fine, but there are lots of tricks going around it. eg: as i where reading this comments, i watched a user advertising in a chan for an lotterie (authname fl4xX btw) and i told him that its not allowed. So he made a new message: [14:01:28] <+fl4xX> holt idler in #(no i dont say the chan, no ads :D) und es gibt für ein paar leute belohnungen! in english: get idlers in my chan and some of the users will get a present. And I think this is a kind of lotterie or ? is this abused

esport|av0r said on Friday 29 November 2002

#74 yes we are very much aware that users often try to trick opers into punishing someone else. No oper should take action unless the case is clear and proven. We have means of independently checking some things, and where we can\'t it falls to the oper to decide if he believes the available evidence.

The price of bouncers isn\'t a excuse to prove the lotteries imo.

people, please. Tombolas put a huge load on the network which just makes it all slower and stuff. And all this advertising for channels is extremely annonying anyway. Additionally, this rule has been added to keep the network stable - I don\'t think it will be removed just because you don\'t like it. Don\'t expect any votes about it either.

JaSt said on Saturday 30 November 2002

MumacH said on Saturday 30 November 2002

#85: advertising channels annoys me and hundreds of other people I know, even though you might like it. The additional load on the servers is caused by exactly this advertising. Picture all the /amsgs flying around all the time, that\'d make a several megs of traffic for big channels. If you want to go on discussing why this rule makes sense, please have a look at the forum, as this is a comments-only zone (yeah I know, I\'m neglecting that as well ;)).

JaSt said on Saturday 30 November 2002

Having a bouncer is not illegal. The mass advertising on QNet for commercial gain is though, and this is what this is about. Listen guys, many of the bnc providers are kiddies who have just bought a server somewhere and are using the network to make a bit of cash. You should be VERY careful who you take a bnc off as even if it is free. We have had, just for a small example, abuse cases of bnc providers logging users and allowing these logs to be stolen, giving away peoples QAuth passwords.

I don\'t want to say i don\'t like this rule but why don\'t add something like the color blocker (i don\'t now how it works) that reacts as someone says a # in channels so it displays \"Cannot send to Channel.\" Then if someone NEEDS to say something with a hash he must use Notice/MSG to a User. BTW: There should be something against Channel Notices as well...

#93: Maybe you should also read the text above your nick, when writing a comment. #96: Might be ok, but what about people who want to say they\'re CS Clan #1 in the world for example? Or what about C/C++ channels, when someone is asking for help with this includes? And last but not least: what about #help and #feds? These channels REALLY need channel names to solve some problems, so maybe a channelmode against hashes would be ok... Blocking channel notices shouldn\'t be a problem...

There\'s no point, if the channel is 2-3 peeps L/Q leaves and most bot channels check channels for activity.
