Different Client versions on QuakeNet, November 2002

Posted by froo on Friday 27 December 2002

Since we are curious souls, the QuakeNet staff made a network wide CTCP version request at non-peak hour in the beginning of November 2002 that hit all connected clients at that time (don't try this at home, folks :p)

We sorted the results and present them here, for your viewing pleasure.

UPDATE: An expanded list of other clients/bots and various scripts.

Please log in to post comments.
hihi first ^^

83 581 100% total So what i was saying under the \"150,000\" news article was correct. Only really 80,000 odd people connecting. Rest are bnc\'s/eggdrops.

Brezelman said on Saturday 28 December 2002

oh, I\'m so stupid, NNScript is a mirc-script forget it ;)

Brezelman said on Saturday 28 December 2002

Yea, we all received the message from god: [02:09:47] ?scanner@? FINGER Try to gline scanner for this mass-flooding ^^

commx said on Saturday 28 December 2002

Finger??? How can you say version from finger reply?

Nike[R] said on Saturday 28 December 2002

you cant. we version\'ed. the network wide finger was to pick up clients infected with the lebsex virus so we could remove them and provide the url they need to read to clean their clients.

Specceh said on Saturday 28 December 2002

scanner only sent one CTCP. /ctcp $*.org FINGER #2, they\'re in other as are all scripts that change the version reply.

slug said on Saturday 28 December 2002

correction: it was done late at night, not peak time. (too tired here)

slug said on Saturday 28 December 2002

youve got too much free time :)

Maastaaa said on Saturday 28 December 2002

nice stats... i thought more ppl are using BitchX.. Can you add Stats for Eggdrop 1.XX - CTCP-answers? What were the Stats created with? :)

Cfreak202 said on Saturday 28 December 2002

hey! What happend to the Mac clients like Snak? I\'m a snak user and appalled by the lack of show on the behalf of Mac-users!

[TamaMan] said on Saturday 28 December 2002

Hail to ze Quackweb! o/ #12: I think Irssi is a lot more used overall. :)

raz said on Saturday 28 December 2002

13:59.43 Irssi 0.8.6.CVS (20021220) - http://irssi.org/ - *uuuuh*

raz said on Saturday 28 December 2002

Yes, don\'t forget as well as \"bots, bncs etc\" within the \"Other\" column, there will be other heavily popular clients such as pIRCh in there too, irssi etc.

Kryten said on Saturday 28 December 2002

/me is surprised.. Are there that many people using xchat & bx.. *woohoo!*

dXm said on Monday 30 December 2002

Yeah, and what about HydraIRC ? http://fly.to/HydraIRC

[XPd]Hydra said on Tuesday 31 December 2002

hrhr, i think NN Script is one of the most used mIRC Scripts, you could make an analyze of this too, i think this would be more interesting ;)

ebusa|FiRe said on Wednesday 01 January 2003

Lol : NNscript is mIRC : the version was to look at the client, not the script. All NNScript users stats are included in mIRC\'s stats.

Kryten said on Wednesday 01 January 2003

Well, there you go :) Suprising people still use Amigas. I know a few using nokia mobile phones to IRC now and then though, and this has meant im going to download NNscript and see what its about :)

Kryten said on Wednesday 01 January 2003

Jesus Nokia communicator users and Amiga users, i am shocked! /me orders Nokia

WdW said on Wednesday 01 January 2003

I dont think that the \"Nokia communicator\" replies are really of a Nokia, cause many users fake this reply. I\'m using dIRC and my CTCP-Version reply is: \"Nokia Communicator IRC (mobile phone [WAP9210]) - v3.523 serial 543.32 - Nokia, Connecting People\"

GP said on Thursday 02 January 2003

What\'s wrong with the lovely Amiga? :) - If my A4000 hadn\'t died in late 97, I\'d surely still be using it on the Net atm (mainly for fun, ok ok.. :p) - AmIRC was great, btw (aahh... memories, memories...)

Nico said on Thursday 02 January 2003

Where r all the telnet users? :D silly

[KBA]SillyG said on Thursday 02 January 2003

yes #28, I think it is eXtreme (a mirc script) that fakes this version response.

illusion` said on Friday 03 January 2003

Hehe, where is the TecXX IRC ? There are still 21 users using this IRC :D

[[[^Dragon^]]] said on Friday 03 January 2003

#32 probably they were not online at that non peak hour

only 18 eggdrops connected to QuakeNet? - Somehow I doubt that. heh..

SuperNoodle said on Saturday 04 January 2003

First of all thanks to Froo, who made this nice evaluation. But one question, why was it made at non-peak hour? because it would be more interesting if it had been Sunday in the evening. //fiRe from NNScript :)

FuBu|FiReStArTe said on Sunday 05 January 2003

I obviously can\'t speak for quakenet on that one #36 / fiRe, but imagine the chaos if it was done at peak time : #help and #feds would be overloaded by people thinking they are being hacked and want to either sue quakenet or packet us to death! ;)

Kryten said on Sunday 05 January 2003

#35, I think your right... anyway, how come only 18 shows up in the list? I personally am aware of atleast 100 eggdrop bots replying with the default eggdrop version reply

[DR]Prometheus said on Wednesday 08 January 2003

For what are used Bnc excactement?

FraKaS said on Saturday 11 January 2003

LOL ... i have a bX connected to quakenet .. bX is funny :P , and mIRC v.6.03 with NNscript, which i use over a BNC. It was a n1c3 idea to scan for the IRC Versions

TOF|Sethesh said on Saturday 11 January 2003

Probably more ppl using BitchX, by default BitchX operates in CTCP stealth mode so wouldn\'t answer a CTCP VERSION request

BinGOs said on Wednesday 15 January 2003

Heh... I\'m probably listed as a mIRC user, since my irssi ctcp_version_reply was set to \'mIRC 8.0 -blaha\' a couple of weeks ;)
